Oompa Loompa Recipe

Restrictive diets painted as new ways of life are front and centre in the world of nutrition at the moment. Whether it’s the latest health kick, a moral decision or a state of confusion in what is actually ok to eat, what is often observed in these lifestyle decisions is a significant restriction to the point of bingeing. I’m currently preparing a presentation around healthy eating to be delivered over some wraps at lunch, as my expertise is in nutrition a lot of questions I receive are centred around the ‘what’ to eat and rightfully so. However, once we establish the ‘what’, it’s also important to consider the ‘how much’ and ‘why’. Now the Oompa Loompa example is a dramatic one but let’s look at carrots as an example. Carrots are a great veggie, full of beta carotene really great for healthy skin and involved in the function of the eye, everything you’ve read as little kids is correct. However, once they get the Dietitian tick, the context of their consumption goes out the window and almost like a bullet train carrots are back on the menu in a big way. I remember working with a Doctor we discovered would be assisted by a little more beta carotene in his diet, he had a slight deficiency. We included carrots in his daily diet but being the over-achiever that he was and holding onto the belief that ‘carrots are what I need’, he had removed a lot of the well-balanced good stuff, replaced it with carrot and eaten sooooooooo many, his beta carotene levels went through the roof. 3 months later his skin was turning orange, he was halfway between a bad fake tan and an Oompa Loompa.  While I’ve taken a bit of artistic license here, it’s actually a condition called Carotenemia.

A checking system:  The point I’m trying to get across is, you’re in charge. The tick of approval or fad approach to the next ‘super food’ should always be given the loved one test. If you’re thinking to yourself: “I probably wouldn’t serve this amount of (insert promoted item here) to a friend or loved one”; then maybe give the 16th carrot for the day a miss :).

“I started training with Amy & Sean in 2013, with the motivation to get fit for our wedding and fit into my dress in April 2014. I was always so tired & sluggish & couldnt get through the day without copious amounts of caffeine & just felt awful in my clothes! After my first session I thought I was going to die, but with the help of some encouraging words instead of the old self never returning, I was determined to get fit for the wedding.

 I then began to enjoy exercise! I had fun, looked forward to getting up at 5am & was disappointed if it was ever too wet and cancelled! Now, two months after the wedding, where I felt the most amazing I ever have, looked fantastic & had so many compliments on how fit I look, I am still enjoying training! Amy and Sean's positive attitude is contagious & I can't thank them enough for what they have helped me achieve. They have also inspired me to achieve my new goal of attaining my own PT qualifications & inspiring other people."
